Communication Minor
A search of research dealing with what employers want in potential employees will show you that being a skilled communicator is of the utmost importance in establishing a successful career.
Whether you are majoring in Business, Biology, Theater, Psychology, English, Health or another major area, a minor in Communication will give you an edge over your peers because you will have completed training in one of the most sought after skills.
Students minoring in Communication are encouraged to get involved in the activities offered by the Department of Communication including the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and our award winning campus radio station- 90.3 WESS. In 2014, WESS won the prestigious College Radio Woodie Award, presented to the "best student- operated radio station in the country" by mtvU. Additionally, at our annual scholarship and awards banquet held every spring we honor our Top Minors with awards and certificates!
Communication Minor Requirements (18 credits)
To complete a minor in Communication, students need to successfully complete 18 credits worth of course work including:
- CMST 111: Introduction to Communication Studies (3 credits; General Education-Humanities- PA)
- CMST 126: Introduction to Mass Media (3 credits; General Education- Humanities-FA)
- CMST 250: Analysis of Human Communication Theory (3 credits)
- One CMST course at any level (100-400; 3 credit) or CMST 219: Radio Practicum (1.5 credits) taken twice
- Two CMST 300 or 400 level courses (3 credits each)
Two of the classes required for the minor in Communication (CMST 111 and CMST 126) can also work to fulfill two of your required courses for General Education!
