Standards for Placing Content
Standards for Placing Content into the ESU Website Content
This page will detail the ESU standards for placing images, time or date and other content into the ESU Website.
Links to URLs
Links to URLs are to placed on a word or description. The URL is not to be spelled in ESU content.
For example if the url is https : // www dot esu dot edu / admissions, then a word or description of this link is created and linked. Such as... your first step to joining ESU is to go to the Admissions Office.
Time and Date Standards
ESU has a standard when placing Time or Date content on to a webpage. Time is placed with lower case letters for the meridians (am/pm) and single digit hours for times less that 10.
Date content is not abbreviated. All date content is spelled out.
Image Standards
Image Standards such as height, width, and compression quality are used when adding images to the ESU web pages. These standards help with giving a uniform look and feel when using the website and aid in rendering(showing) when using a mobile, tablet or PC device.
Image Compression Standard
Image compression is how many pixels (dots within the image) are within a inch row of the image. The greater amount of pixels per inch would mean a better image quality. A lower amount means the image quality will look sketchy or pixilated. Larger image compressions are great when display in print or signs but would slow down the image displayed on or device.
The Image Compression Standard is
- 72ppi (pixels per inch)
- compression quality of 6 when creating a JPG image
Image Type Standards
There are three image types that are available. They are Portrait, Landscape and Square.
Portrait
Portrait images has a width narrower than its heights. Great for use within portrait photos.
Landscape
Landscape images has a width greater than its height.
Square
Images that are square have an equal width and height.
When Choosing Images
The size, compression and usability rights of an image are important. Images that are too small may not show properly. Images with Lower compression rates will show as pixilated or very dotty & distracting. Also, you must have the legal rights to publish a photo or image on the ESU website.
When selecting images consider the following...
- Choose a high resolution image.
- Take pictures with a DSLR or Mirrorless camera.
- Choose the highest resolution possible when downloading image repositories such as
Flikr or Pixabay.
NOTE: For Flikr, send us the link. - Have the rights to post or publish the photo
- Higher resolution images are better to be cropped into Portrait, Square or Landscape sizes.
Images for Snippets
Faculty Bio, Caption Photos and People Tiles are examples of Snippets. Snippets are like mini-apps to aid in the display of information on the ESU Website. Below is a list of Snippets available to the Web Stewards. When submitting photos to the Web Services department, tell us what Snippet you are using the image for.
Hero Image Submission
Hero images are the top image banners on the ESU web pages. High resolution images are required.
